Being overweight or obese is linked to a lack of sexual enjoyment, desire, and difficulties with sexual performance. The reason isn't clear, but may be linked to self-esteem, unsatisfactory relationships, social stigma, and other psychological issues.

Drink, Drink and be slimmer

before breakfast, lunch and dinner lost five pounds more than dieters who didn’t increase their water intake. Those who drank more water also kept more of the weight off after a year, said Brenda Davy, an associate professor at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg.

The study included only middle aged and older adults between the ages of 55 and 75 who were on diet – 1,200 calories per day for women and 1,500 calories per day for men. Half of the people were told to drink 16 ounces of water before every meal. After three months, the dieters who drank water had lost an average of about 15.5 pounds, while those who didn’t lost just 11 pounds.

It’s a popular anecdote that drinking more water will help you lose weight. Davy’s study is the first randomized controlled trial to test

Dr Davy, from Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, said water may be so effective simply because it fills the stomach up with a liquid that has no calories.

EAT YOUR GREENS TO FIGHT THE DIABETES

vegetables such as asparagus could help fight obesity and diabetes Research published today in the British Medical Journal claims eating more green leafy vegetables can significantly reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

The authors, led by Patrice Carter at the University of Leicester, reviewed six studies, involving over 220,000 people, that focused on the links between fruit and vegetable consumption and Type 2 diabetes.

They found that eating one and a half extra servings of green leafy vegetables a day reduces the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 14 per cent.

Link between green leafy vegetables and diabetes

“We already know that the health benefits of eating vegetables are far-reaching, but this is the first time that there has been a suggested link specifically between green, leafy vegetables and a reduced risk of developing Type 2 diabetes,” said Dr Iain Frame, Director of Research at Diabetes UK. “However, because of the relatively limited number of studies collated in this analysis it is too early to isolate green leafy vegetables and present them alone as a method to reduce the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.”

The researchers say there is a need for further investigation into the potential benefits of green leafy vegetables

Kellogg’s Breakfast Cereals Get Healthier

Kellogg’s  Breakfast Cereals To Go Healthy

Kellogg’s is reducing the sugar content in a range of its breakfast cereals by 15%.

The move comes after criticism that high levels of sugar, salt and fat in cereals are contributing to childhood obesity.

The change will happen next year in four of the firm’s Coco Pops products.coco-pops

Greg Peterson, Kellogg’s UK managing director, said: “We have listened to mums. They want a balance: lower sugar cereals which children will still eat.”

He added: “We have invested millions of pounds and thousands of staff hours over the last two years to make this happen, and will do this without compromising the taste.”

At present Coco Pops contain 35% sugar. After the reduction the level will go down to 29.75 %.
Kellogg’s move follows a trend of reductions – particularly in salt levels which have fallen significantly in a range of food products in recent years

Kellogg’s released Coco Pops Os, with a fifth of the sodium per serve, this year.

It has also just launched Sultana Bran Buds, a kid-friendly fibre option in shapes instead of flakes, which has half the salt of the original

Obese solider returns to duty

Obese solider returns to duty
A Mexican court has ruled that an obese soldier, who was fired for being obese, should be allowed to return to duty.

The court upheld that although the army should still be able to cut the contracts of overweight soldiers, the sacking was unwarranted in this particular case.
The Mexican police force has traditionally been affected by weight problems. In Mexico City, 2,000 police offers are currently undergoing anti-obesity training. They are receiving counselling and sticking to strict diets, that limit their calorie intake to 2,400 calories per day.

Mexico has some of the highest obesity levels in the world. Obesity there has tripled since the 1980s and 70% of adults are overweight. In January, President Felipe Calderon said that the country has the largest proportion of overweight people in the world, overtaking  the USA

A similar problem in America

In America, ex-army generals have warned that obesity could be a threat to the nation’s security in the future. Retired army general, Brigadier General Gillespie, said: “The nation’s waistline is bulging, and the pool of healthy and qualified recruits is shrinking. We need to pass this child nutrition bill in order to get out in front of this problem before it further damages our nation’s security.”

More than 9 million young American adults are too overweight to join the army.

Court Halts the Sale of Acai Berry Supplements,

ACAI BERRY SCAM

At the request of the Federal Trade Commission, a U.S. district court has ordered the marketers of acai berry supplements, “colon cleansers,” and other products to temporarily halt an Internet sales scheme that allegedly scammed consumers out of $30 million or more in 2009 alone through deceptive advertising and unfair billing practices.  The FTC will seek a permanent prohibition.  Since 2007, victimized consumers have flooded law enforcement agencies and the Better Business Bureau with more than 2,800 complaints about the company.

Acai berry supplements, derived from acai palm trees that are native to Central and South America, have become popular in recent years.  Last year, the Better Business Bureau named fake “free” trial offers – including those for acai supplements offered by the defendants in this case – as one of the “Top 10 Scams and Rip Offs of 2009.”

“Too many ‘free’ offers come with strings attached,” said David Vladeck, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection. “In this case, the defendants promised buyers a ‘risk free’ trial and then illegally billed their credit cards again and again – and again.  We estimate that about a million people have fallen victim to this scam.  As if that weren’t enough, there were fake endorsements from celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and Rachael Ray for a product that didn’t work in the first place

The alleged deceptive practices include:

  • Falsely claiming that using AcaiPure could lead to rapid and substantial weight loss. Consumers were told that “[m]ost consumers taking AcaiPure report weight loss anywhere from 10-25 pounds in the first month.”
  • Making unproven claims that AcaiPure’s weight-loss claims are backed by “double-blind, placebo-controlled weight loss studies.”
  • Deceptively claiming that Colopure could help prevent colon cancer because it would “cleanse your entire system,” “detoxify your organs,” and break down and remove “toxic waste matter which may have been stuck in the folds and wrinkles of your digestive system for years and years.”
  • Falsely claiming that celebrities including Oprah Winfrey and Rachael Ray have endorsed products marketed by Central Coast Nutraceuticals, Inc.  In marketing AcaiPure, the defendants declared on their homepage, “Acai Berry rated #1 SUPERFOOD by Rachael Ray.”  A photo of Oprah appeared on the homepage, next to a quote that read in part, “Studies have shown that this little berry is one of the most nutritious and powerful foods in the world!”  In fact, in declarations to the FTC, both celebrities denied endorsing AcaiPure.
