Sex-Drive Killer: Obesity

Being overweight or obese is linked to a lack of sexual enjoyment, desire, and difficulties with sexual performance. The reason isn't clear, but may be linked to self-esteem, unsatisfactory relationships, social stigma, and other psychological issues.

A JAB A DAY KEEPS OBESITY AWAY

A REVOLUTIONARY once-a-day jab that can fight obesity has been developed by scientists.imagesCANWIB9A
The fat-busting drug controls the symptoms of diabetes as well as leading to significant weight loss.

Liraglutide was given the go-ahead earlier this year by European regulators. Now the latest tests have shown it to be significantly more effective than fat pills.

Experts hailed the results as a breakthrough, with one saying: “At last science is providing treatments that work in obesity.”

The daily injection could help prevent thousands of people with Type 2 diabetes from having to take insulin, which can cause them to pile on the pounds.

Trials have already shown the jab can help people lose weight by increasing the “full” feeling after eating and by slowing the speed at which their stomach empties.

Another benefit is that it lowers blood pressure, a major factor in the development of heart disease.

In a study by Professor Arne Astrup, of the University of Copenhagen, published in The Lancet, high doses of liraglutide were found to lead to greater weight loss than the prescription-only drug orlistat.

A half-strength pill containing 60mg of orlistat is available over the counter as anti-obesity drug alli.

Trials have shown that alli, which is the first pill of its kind to be sold without prescription, can help men and women lose between five and 10 per cent of their body weight in as little as three months when taken with three meals a day.

For a woman weighing 11 stone, this would see her shed more than a stone or one dress size. In the Danish trial, the authors studied the effect of liraglutide on weight in 564 obese people who had a body mass index of between 30 and 40.

Fight Fat With Dairy Products

A new study has found a higher intake of dairy foods combined with a low calorie diet can help weight loss.milk2

The 12 week study by Curtin University in Perth showed people who consumed 5 rather than 3 serves of dairy a day had higher mean levels of weight and fat loss.

The 40 people surveyed consumed two glasses of milk, two small tubs of yoghurt and 40 grams of cheese each day as part of a reduced calorie diet.

The University’s Wendy Chan She Ping Delfos says people trying to lose weight can benefit from increasing their dairy intake.

“It will help you reduce your blood pressure and it also causes greater total abdominal fat loss so you would lose weight more around the belly,” she said

Obesity Harms Chances Of Pregnancy

The risk of premature babies and stillbirths after IVF is linked to a women’s obesity levels

Obese women are likely to have more problems with fertility treatment and to suffer pregnancy complications, according to a new study.

Scientists from Michigan State University, USA, have warned that even women who are deemed to be overweight rather than obese are 13 percent less likely to have a live birth.

Those women are also 16 percent more likely to give birth prematurely.

The study of 50,000 women showed the fatter a woman was, the lower her chance was of IVF proving successful.

The most obese were 35 percent less likely to fall pregnant and 59 percent more likely to have a premature baby.

The level of obesity also increased the risk of miscarriage.

Dr Barbara Luke, leader of the study, said: ‘The take-home message from this is that women need to reduce their weight before trying fertility treatment

Obesity is now so common it is perceived as normal.”

That’s the take of an Australian researcher whose recent survey of pregnant women showed many of them oblivious to the fact they were overweight when they became pregnant.

The study looked involved 412 women, 30 percent of whom were overweight or obese. Of those women, 36 percent said their weight was normal. And of the women deemed to be obese, only 16 percent said they were aware of that.

Military To Help The World’s Heaviest Man

THE world’s heaviest man is a Brit who has ballooned to 70 STONE, it was revealed yesterday.

The man needs a £20,000 life-saving op after a compulsive eating disorder left him “super-obese”.

He eats 20,000 calories of food a day – EIGHT TIMES the official adult male average of 2,500.

AND three family-sized takeaways a night and wolfs down Sunday roasts like snacks.

He has spent much of the past eight years in bed at his home in Ipswich, Suffolk.

His care costs taxpayers an estimated £100,000 a year.

And now he needs drastic stomach surgery to stop him eating and keep him alive – at a cost of £20,000 to the NHS.EMERGENCY teams, medics, NHS professionals and the military are today uniting in a fight to save the life of one of the heaviest people in Britain.

In an operation weeks in the planning, a co-ordinated fight is underway to help the Ipswich man, who needs the help of specialist weight-loss doctors and possible surgery to help him lose tens of stones to save his life.

Specialist teams are preparing him to take him out of Suffolk to one of the only centres in Britain that can deal with him – 152 miles away in Chichester, Sussex.

One option being considered by NHS chiefs and the military is to fly him there in an RAF Chinook helicopter, considered to be one of the best forms of emergency transport anywhere in the world

HOW SWEET IT IS

Added sugars, which are sprinkled on and processed into packaged foods and beveragesthumbnail
, have become all too common in the American diet, says the American Heart Association. The group argues that sugar bingeing is helping drive the uptick in metabolic changes in the American population, including the exploding obesity rate, and has now recommended an upper limit on daily consumption. Women should consume no more than 100 calories per day of added sugars, and men should not top 150 calories per day. There goes the soda habit: One 12-ounce can contains about 8 teaspoons or about 33 grams of added sugar, which equals approximately 130 calories, notes the AHA. (One gram of sugar serves up 4 calories, according to the American Dietetic Association.)

JUNK FOOD makers spend billions advertising unhealthy foods to kids.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, food makers spend some $1.6 billion annually to reach children through the traditional media as well the Internet, in-store advertising, and sweepstakes. An article published in 2006 in the Journal of Public Health Policy puts the number as high as $10 billion annually. Promotions often use cartoon characters or free giveaways to entice kids into the junk food fold. PepsiCo has pledged that it will advertise only “Smart Spot” products to children under 12.
